After completing the modifications to the Birdy folding bike in the earlier posts, there are some bike dimensions that have been altered. This is largely brought about by the change in wheel size from 18" 355 to 20" 406, and also a few other component changes.
Fully upgraded Birdy folding bike with a 12 speed drivetrain, carbon wheelset, wireless shifting and full hydraulic brakes.
Bottom bracket height is now 295 mm, increased from the 280 mm of the stock Birdy City with 18" wheels. This is due to the larger 20" wheels with a 30 mm greater diameter.
Handlebar to ground height is now 935 mm, increased from the 920 mm of the stock setup, also due to the change of wheel size.
How it looks when folded. Very similar to the original folded condition, except that the handlebar sticks out a bit higher due to additional width (new 580 mm vs stock 540 mm).
Top view of the folded Birdy. Same as the stock setup.
Folded width is 33 cm, which is the same as the stock setup.
Folded length to rear end of saddle is 74 cm, which is also the same as the stock setup. Changing to larger wheels did not increase the width and length of the folded bike.
Highest point of the folded Birdy is at the handlebar, which is 73 cm off the ground. This is taller than the stock 70 cm, mainly due to the increase in wheel diameter and also wider handlebars.
Weight of Birdy after all these modifications is 9.64 kg including PD-A530 pedals and kickstand.
This is very close to the theoretical weight of 9.68 kg.
If we exclude the pedals and kickstand, the upgraded Birdy would weigh about 9.2 kg.
Weight Comparison (without pedals and kickstand)
Stock Birdy City 9 Speed: 10.8 kg
Upgraded Birdy AXS 12 Speed: 9.2 kg
Weight saved: 1.6 kg
Folded Size Comparison
Stock 18" 355 wheels: 74 x 33 x 70 cm (L x W x H)
Upgraded 20" 406 wheels: 74 x 33 x 73 cm (L x W x H)
Folded height was increased by 3 cm.
Here we have it, a clear and definitive weight and folded size information on the Birdy folding bike. Prior to this, I could not find reliable and consistent sources for weight and folded size.
The weight reduction of 1.6 kg is quite substantial, given that it is a 15% bike weight reduction. However, the overall bike weight is still a bit heavier than expected, due to the relatively heavy frameset with suspension.
Folded size is acceptable, as it is the same length as the Fnhon DB12, but slimmer and taller. This means that it is better suited for slim but tall storage areas, rather than under the table.
