Just got some new stuff to "zhng" my bike today! Remember the last time when I added a bashguard to my bike? It is to prevent chain drop, which tends to happen when I upshift when pedaling down a slope. I am happy to report that after installing the bashguard, there has been no chain drop issues at all! I can pedal and change gears whenever I like without fearing that the chain will drop off the chainring.
However, the bashguard which I installed the last time was gold in colour. Even though gold is part of my bike's colour scheme, the big disc of gold stands out too much and does not fit the overall look of the bike. The new black bashguard looks so much better! Also, I get to use my gold chainring bolts hahaha...
This is Albert, can i check with you... your crankset is which brand, model and how many teeth and where did you find the black color bashguard?
ReplyDeleteHi Albert, its a Shimano 105 crankset, 53T. I got the bash guard online. you interested in getting one?
ReplyDeleteYeah... do you have extra to sell me? If don't have, can provide me the website you ordered yours from? Need to buy one before i go change the crankset. This bashguard is one-sided or sandwich the chainring like the orig dahon?
ReplyDeleteSaw your ad in togoparts; gold color is too bright for me, prefer black or grey.
ReplyDeleteNo extra bashguard now. Website is Taobao.com, although u need a China credit card to order. Shipping is slow though.
ReplyDeleteThis bashguard is outside only, the inside got the black plastic chainguard, together they keep the chain on the chainring.
Will be going overseas, might bring back some bike stuff.
Hi Steve, the black plastic chainguard came with the bashguard or you got it from elsewhere?
ReplyDeleteCan you take pictures to show me how the black plastic chainguard look like and how both the bashguard and chainguard keep the chain on the chainring?
Appreciate it.
hey Albert, let me know how I can contact you via facebook, thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi Steve, is it advisable to remove the bashguard? Secondly, may i ask what kind of chainring bolt are you using? I find the single is too short (shallow thread) and double is too long (unable to tighten). Thanks for the advice.
ReplyDeleteHi Crystal,
ReplyDeleteThe bashguard is there mainly to prevent the chain from dropping off the outside of the chainring.
And regarding the length of the chainring bolt, you may want to get the spacer of a different height. I got some 2mm ones from Taobao.
In the meantime, there are 2 ways you can go about doing it.
1) Mount the chainring on the inside and the bashguard on the outside of the crankarm. Chainline may be affected.
2) Use the single nut and pair it with the double bolt. This should be sufficient to hold everything together.
Thanks Steve. In fact I was thinking of method#2 also (cleaner) but that will cost me another set of bolts. Hmm.... :)
ReplyDeletehi Steve, Very interesting post. I have been looking for a bash guard but very difficult to get one. Do yiu have one for sale or could I get trouble you to get one on my behalf? I will pay one in advance because I don't have a China Credit card. Thank you. AikSiong
