Bestrider Pump Pro 16: Introduction Part 2

Here is Part 2 of the introduction to this new kids bike, the Bestrider Pump Pro 16. Previously I looked at the overall bike, and now in this post I will study each component is more details.

This bike comes with a very nice crankset, as it is a Hollowtech style crank, with shorter crank arms and also a narrow wide chain ring. Hard to find aftermarket as well, especially for these kind of kids-specific components.

Single speed stock drivetrain

Very nice crankset, especially with the lightweight-looking chain ring design.

Hollowtech II spindle design, with a open-ended hollow spindle, MTB style.

Crankarm has a large cutout at the rear for weight reduction.

Crankarm length is 102 mm, same as what is printed at the back. Good length that is appropriate for this bike size.

32 teeth chainring with narrow wide teeth! Very pro feel to it. Matched with a single speed chain.

Single speed freewheel at the rear

Rear hub with single speed freewheel

Comes with chain tensioners on the horizontal dropouts.

Wheels have a black rim and uses black spokes.

View of the front wheel

These are 16 inch wheels and tires, but it is of the smaller 305 size and not the more common 349 size used on Bromptons, other trifolds or the Fnhon Gust. Very wide at 52 mm.

Max tire pressure of 65 PSI. Not necessary for such wide tires.

Actual tire width when inflated is about 46.5 mm, not as wide as the claimed 52 mm. Probably due to the narrow rims.

Finally, the optional kickstand that is always good to have. 102 grams inclusive of mounting bolts.

Kickstand has its own dedicated mount under the non-drive side chain stay.

Somehow the non-drive side chain tensioner has a missing bolt, couldn't find it anywhere.

I was curious how the hub axle nut worked, so I took it out to see. Instead of a quick release axle, it has bolts that clamp it on both ends.

Bolt fits inside a black aluminium cover that acts as a washer. Neat.

Let's now take a look at the frame geometry, and see how this kids bike differs from full sized adult bikes or folding bikes.

Chain stay length is 273 mm, way shorter than folding bikes and road bikes that are around 400-420 mm.

Wheelbase is exactly 700 mm, also much shorter than larger bikes with wheelbase of 990-1020 mm.

Standover height is approximately 450 mm, depending on exactly where you measure along the sloping top tube.

Another full view of the stock bike, before I start upgrading it.

Once more, I am not sure why the stock handlebar is so high and wide.

Overall, I am rather pleased with this bike, although there are some components which I will be changing out. Here is a comparison of this bike in stock condition, with the previous Early Seeker 14 kids bike.

Early Rider Seeker 14
5.7 kg without pedals and kickstand, in stock condition.
About 6 kg with Early Rider pedals (200 g) and kickstand (~100 g).

Bestrider Pump Pro 16
5.6 kg without pedals and kickstand, in stock condition.
About 6 kg with larger Early Rider pedals (266 g) and kickstand (102 g).

In this case, the stock weight of this new 16 inch kids bike is actually about the same as the Early Rider Seeker 14. This is good, as it means a similar baseline to start from.

The new bike will not be used in the stock single speed condition, as I will first upgrade the components to make it a 3 speed bike using a 3 speed internal hub. Check out the following posts!
