Remember when I had a hard time finding the Early Rider pedals for the Bestrider Pump Pro 16 kids bike? I finally managed to buy it as an aftermarket order, but later realized that it was actually slightly larger than the original ones that came with the Early Rider Seeker 14.
Then, someone told me about this particular model of Promend pedals that are not specifically labeled as kids size, but they are smaller than usual. These pedals use sealed bearings, and are of better quality than most pedals out there. Out of curiosity, I decided to get a pair to check it out. It was available at a reasonable price, cheaper than the Early Rider pedals that I bought.
To my surprise, I found that they are the same size as the Early Rider pedals that I got for the Bestrider kids bike!
These Promend PD-R87 pedals are the same size as the Early Rider pedals that I bought. In fact, they look 90% the same!
Based on this quick comparison, it seems that if you ever need smaller pedals, these Promend pedals will do the job! They are relatively cheap, and yet are of good quality as the sealed bearings allow it to spin smoothly around the spindle.
They come with pedal pins installed, but the stock pedal pins seem a bit long for casual use. For off-road usage it is useful, but otherwise the long pins just increase the risk of injury. For those who have been hit in the shin or calf by pedals with pins, you know how painful it is.
In order to reduce the risk of injury to the leg, I decided to remove the stock pedal pins. I happened to have shorter pedal pins from the Shimano PD-EH500 pedals, and decided to see if those fit.
Bag of 16 pedal pins that come with the PD-EH500 pedals.
Since I only had 16 pedal pins to use on the 4 sides of the 2 Promend pedals, I could only have 4 pins on each side of each pedal. This should be enough.
Installed 4 shorter pedal pins on the 4 corners of each pedal, instead of 6.
These shorter pedal pins are safer, as they don't protrude so much and the risk of injury to the leg is lower. Although they are shorter, they protrude just enough to provide additional grip on the shoe sole, as the pedal gets rather slippery if the pedal pins are removed completely.
Good to know that these Promend pedals are suitable for kids bikes as they are smaller. However, do be careful with the stock pedal pins.
