Focus Paralane: Dura-Ace Hydraulic Brake Calipers R9270

In this new generation of Dura-Ace and Ultegra, there are also new hydraulic brake calipers. One of the new feature is 10% wider pad clearance, to minimize the chance of rotor rubbing. The bleeding procedure has also been revised, to make it easier since the bleed port has been moved to the outside surface.

For Dura-Ace, the caliper body is now made from a single block, instead of two halves that are bolted together like on the previous generation of Dura-Ace and Ultegra. This Mono-Body construction is similar to that used on XTR BR-M9100.

I really like the single body construction, as it is lighter in weight, more rigid, and also looks cooler. I bought the brake calipers as a J-Kit set together with the Dura-Ace Di2 shifters.

These brake calipers will be installed on the 12 speed Focus Paralane, check out the other articles here.

Pair of new Dura-Ace hydraulic brake calipers, BR-R9270.

Comes as a J-Kit set, with the hose already connected and with hydraulic fluid inside.

The end of the hose already has a connecting insert installed, and with a wax seal to prevent oil leakage. If you don't need to cut the hose to length, just plug this end into the shifter and tighten the bolt, and it is done!

Due to the Mono-Body construction, the side of the body needs to have a big hole in order to machine the piston ports. This hole is then sealed up with an aluminium plug as you can see here.

Model number printed on the inside of the brake caliper. There are no fixing bolts to join both halves of the brake caliper together.

There are two small rubber plugs, one to cover the bleed screw, and the other to cover the bleeding port. These plugs are rather loose, I expect them to drop off soon.

For the front caliper, it comes already pre-installed with the Flat Mount adapter for 160 mm rotor size.

Small parts that come with the front caliper. The yellow bleed block is a new design that is more compact.

Front brake caliper with 1000 mm hose, oil and adapter is 145 grams.

Add another 7 grams for the two fixing bolts and an anti-loosening clip.

Rear caliper is also 145 grams, with a longer 1700 mm hose and oil, but no adapter.

Rear caliper has a few more parts, with two long mounting bolts. Note that one of the bolts does not have the T-shaped pin at the end.

These two bolts weigh 14 grams.

For a rear 160 mm rotor, an adapter is needed to offset the caliper position. This adds another 17 grams.

Before installation, I did a quick comparison with the older Ultegra BR-R8070, which is of the previous generation.

Old Ultegra brake caliper is made of two halves bolted together.

There are also two large bolts to join the two halves of the Ultegra brake caliper together, which adds to the weight and size.

I like how the new Dura-Ace caliper looks, with its Mono-Body construction and also very nice surface finishing. After installing it onto the bike, let's take another look.

    1. Check out the Exploded View of the BR-R9270 brake caliper, the part code would be there if it is available as a replacement part.
