Phase 1 of the Focus Paralane 12 speed upgrade is finally completed! To be accurate, the upgrade was actually completed more than 6 months ago, but I only found the time to write about it now.
This is considered Phase 1 as the upgrade is not completed, as the new 12 speed Dura-Ace crankset is not yet available, so I am still using the older 11 speed Dura-Ace R9100 crankset. Since the pros are also using this older crankset with the new 12 speed groupset, I guess it works well enough not to be an issue.
Here are the pictures of the completed bike, with new 12 speed Dura-Ace components!
Paired with XTR MT900 disc rotors
Using 160 mm rotors at the rear as well.
Dura-Ace front derailleur for use with road 12 speed drivetrains.
Dura-Ace 12 speed drivetrain installed, except for the crankset.
Bare bike with no accessories installed. Using Dura-Ace C50 wheels.
At this point I will not show the full bike specifications yet, since the upgrade is not completed. However, the actual weight is similar to the calculated weight.
Full bike weighs 7.3 kg including pedals, but no bar tape.
The full bike weight, inclusive of bar tape, but without pedals or accessories would be about 7 kg. Once the XTR PD-M9020 pedals are added, bike weight would be about 7.4 kg.
This is a decent weight for a disc brake road bike, although more high end bikes would be around 7 kg inclusive of pedals.
At least the initial baseline weight of 7.4 kg is considered quite low, as it will add up quickly once I add other essential accessories for all-weather commuting.
Mudguards +500 grams
Accessories (tools, spare, pump, lights, etc) +1 kg
This gives a ready-to-commute bike weight of 8.9 kg, which is quite a big increase from the race weight of 7.4 kg.
Comparing this latest spec to my previous commuting bikes such as the Fabike C3 and the Avanti Inc 3, it is still much lighter.
Road bike spec, without pedals and accessories:
Canyon Endurace: 7.0 kg
Focus Paralane 1x11: 7.0 - 7.2 kg
Focus Paralane: 2x11: 7.2 kg
Focus Paralane 2x12: 7.0 kg
Cervelo Aspero: 7.6 kg
New Di2 shifters vs the old Di2 shifters. Ergonomics feel quite different, check out the other post for the details.
Once the Dura-Ace 12 speed crankset is available, I will continue writing about Phase 2 of the upgrade.
